Today is traffic light polishing day in Oberwinterthur. Two men on step ladders with pink dusters are currently making the lights outside Bahnhof Oberwinterthur all shiny and clean.
Sometimes life in Switzerland makes me smile :0)

Made a cup of tea and left it on the step whilst went to fetch my book, and this is what greeted me ONE MINUTE later. 22 flies floating in formation death.

Wondering what this is doing at our bus stop?! I wonder if it has something to do with the pennants that have appeared on the overhead bus lines in Winterthur Stadt. They seem to have suffered from some 'flipping' in the storms.

I looked out of the window about an hour ago and there was an armed policeman outside my window.
By the time I got to the window to look more closely, another four had appeared and, along with someone dressed in a fluorescent jacket (think one of the men who works in the park), went through the gate into the park next door.

Mysterious! I'm intrigued. I had to go and fetch the boys at this point. All was quiet when I went outside and no sign of any excitement when we got back.

As you can see from their backs, the police are called die Polizei or Schmiär/Tschuggerej, and a policeman - ein Polizist - Landjegär, Tschuggär, Schürgä.

After an exhausting day skiing in Laax, and having been quite ill on the journey home, Jude took to the sofa and looked very forlorn. Then he spied my new iPad app and soon perked up when I gave him the iPad and let him play.
And we had a good giggle when we were playing. We knew that the app said a German word and we had to spell it, but couldn't understand why the app kept giving us the same word - buchstabiere. Then we realized that meant 'spell'. Pleased to say that our spelling was pretty good!

Today at Deutschkurs we talked about sending and receiving letters and packages at the PostOffice or die Post so I thought we'd have a postbox or ein Briefkasten today. As in Spain, postboxes in Switzerland are yellow.

To post a letter to England you must buy eine Briefmarke (same in Swiss German) or stamp and it will cost you 1.30CHF or 1.40CHF. Our homework was to look at http://www.post.ch/  and work out how much it would cost to send a variety of things to places around the work. 

We also learned that a small parcel - ein kleines Paket - is called ein Päckchen or Päckli. 

 Words that end -chen in German are diminutives ie a little something, and in Swiss German they use -li for the same purpose.
zum Bespiel -
ein Brot bread- ein Brötchen a roll - Büürli/ Weggli

The reduit was getting a bit full of bottles and cans so today I put them all in my trusty pink shopping trolley and tootled off to Migros (plastic bottles) then to the Sammelstelle to dispose of the bottles and cans.

So today I recycled
PET Getränkeflaschen - PET drinks bottles
NonPET Flaschen - bottles that aren't PET
Grünglas (Weinflaschen) - Green glass (wine bottles)
Braunglas (Bierflaschen) - Brown glass (beer bottles)
Weissglas (Marmeladeglas und Tomatesosseglas) - white glass (jam jars and tomato pasta sauce bottles)
Aluminiumdosen - aluminium cans
